Biking in NZ has a vision
7 May 2012
It is an exciting time for New Zealand cycling. We have more professionals riding overseas than ever before, more events for all sorts of levels throughout the country and there are now over 750,000 of us riding recreationally. It’s all great positive stuff and is reflected in the fantastic feedback we get from our readers.
With all this growth there needs to be some sort of plan to make sure it all continues and we can all reap the benefits, those benefits being anything from improved safety and recognition on the roads and more people riding more often to winning more Olympic medals.
Bike NZ have a plan, in fact they have a vision, and that vision is for New Zealand to be a nation embracing cycling and providing more quality cycling opportunities for more Kiwis, making it easier for more people to develop a lifelong love of cycling.
They are very keen to work alongside the cycling community to develop a unified five year national plan, something we have never had in New Zealand before. It is all good stuff, but a big ask with lots to do to get all the various sectors of the sport on board.
The ‘plan’ is not just about riders, it will involve everyone associated with developing and supporting cycling, from clubs, riding groups, schools, councils through to coaches, officials, event organisers and hopefully media.
We are at a crucial point where our cycling growth needs to be managed for it to continue and build. I know I am preaching to the converted, but we will all benefit if Bike NZ get their planning right and in fact do address the needs and challenges faced from the grass roots levels up.
I encourage you to go to the BikeNZ website and look up the plan, have a read and figure out where you fit and provide any feedback you feel will help. To truly capitalise on the significant growth of cycling in New Zealand there needs to be better communication and coordination and Bike NZ have membership plans around those issues.
So go on, have a look at the plan and together we can help guide New Zealand to be a nation embracing cycling.
Stay safe, stay warm cheers John |
